KING WINS MASTERS

Mike King defeated Steve Waters 238 to 191 in the finals of the 25th annual Greater Cleveland Bowling Association Bernie Vozar Masters Invitational to become a two time champion of the event.  King started match play in 5th place and won 6 of his 8 matches to move into first place for the stepladder finals. Waters started the stepladder in fifth place and had to defeat 3 others to get to the finals.

King started the finals with a turkey to take a commanding lead as Waters opened with an 8-10 split, a spare, before getting a double. After a solid 8 pin in the fourth frame, King got a double. It looked like Waters was down after leaving a split in the fifth and making a spare in the sixth, but he came back with strikes in the seventh, eighth, and first ball in the tenth for a 191.  King was not to be denied as he got a spare, strike, spare, and struck out in the tenth for a 238 game.

The tournament was held at Brookgate Lanes on May 18 and 19.  Sixty-four of the top bowlers from the Cleveland City Tournament, including last year’s Masters Champion, Al Walko Jr., participated in the Masters Invitational on Saturday, May 18.  Each bowler rolled 8 games before the field was cut to the top 32 bowlers.  Those 32 bowled another 4 games to narrow the field to the top 8 bowlers.

On Sunday, the top 8 bowlers included 4 former Master champions: Paul Gibson, Norm Loescher, Paul Ashby (2 time champion), and Mike King.  This group was joined by Will Haverland, Jim Pencak, Eric Selzer, and Steve Waters.  These 8 bowled another 8 games of match play to determine the top 5 for the stepladder finals.  The top 5 for the stepladder finals were Steve Waters, Will Haverland, Paul Ashby, Eric Selzer, and Mike King.

In Match 1 Waters defeated Haverland 195 to 192. Match 2 Waters defeated Ashby 215 to 205. The semi-final had Waters defeating Selzer 244 to 214 and the final was King defeating Waters 238 to 191.  In addition to the first place prize of $1,000, Mike will receive an entry into the 2014 USBC Masters and be recognized at the Annual Cleveland Bowling Awards Banquet on August 3.
